While traditional allopathic medicine treats a disease with its antidote, homeopathic practitioners follow the principal of treating "like" with "like." This means that an extremely minute dose of a substance that can in large quantities cause the symptom being presented, is used to help the body to heal itself.

The minute substances used in treatment are called homeopathic remedies, of which there are currently some 2000. In addition practitioners prescribe tissue salts. First introduced by a German doctor, Wilhelm Schussler, at the end of the 19th century, the salts are use to treat deficiencies of vital minerals.

Homeopathic medicine also differs from conventional treatment in its view of symptoms. While allopathic physicians see symptoms as a manifestation of the disease, homeopaths see symptoms as an expression of the body's attempts to heal itself. Consequently they do not try to eliminate the symptoms, but rather to stimulate the body's healing mechanisms.

Today a consultation will begin with the homeopath "taking your case." This involves an in-depth interview that includes not only a medical history but numerous questions about your lifestyle as well as your personality traits, emotional health, and spiritual beliefs and practices.
